People’s Republic of China (1949-present)
1949- The end of the Chinese civil war and the dynasties. In 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the creation of the People's Republic of China. Communism is the new form of government in China.
1951- The Chinese army invades Tibet and forces the Tibetan government to sign an agreement. Chinese armies remain in Tibet to "keep an eye" on the Tibetan government.
1959- The Tibetans protest over the increase of control that Chinese government and armies. Thousands of people lose their lives and the Dali Llama has to flee the country. China completely takes over Tibet and the Tibetan government is dissolved.
1958- 1961-Mao Zedong and others, launched the 'Great Leap Forward' in 1958. to improve China's economy, industry, and technology. However, poor planning and bad management of crops managed to starve 20 million people to death.
In 1966, begins the Great Cultural Revolution. The Great Cultural Revolution was a radical movement that closed schools, slowed production, and cut China's off from outside world. It lasted for two years
1989-About 1 million students hold pro-democracy protests in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The uprising is crushed by the army. A few thousand protestors are killed.
1993- The building of the Three Gorges River Dam across the Yangtze starts. Because of all struggles that the communist government is having with its people, it took 13 years to build. It is finally completed in 2006.
1997- China regains control of Hong Kong, which had been under British rule for 99 years.
2008- China opens up to the world and hosts the Olympics in Beijing.
2010- The building of dams in China increases the amount of electricity available for industry. Industry booms and China's production is greater than Japan. China officially passes Japan to become the world’s second largest economy.
2013 December - China successfully lands the Yutu ("Jade Rabbit") robotic rover on the surface of the moon
2017- China's president meets with US President Donald Trump to talk about trade cooperation
2020 January - Outbreak of Covid-19 coronavirus in Hubei province spreads worldwide.
